Driver cheats death after car bursts into flames following Pasir Gudang crash


JOHOR BARU: A driver cheated death after his car skidded and hit a house at Jalan Biru in Taman Rinting, Masai near to the Pasir Gudang highway on Thursday (Feb 6) at 1.45pm.

The incident caused the car to catch fire with an estimated 60% damaged, but the 22-year-old driver managed to escape unhurt.

The Johor Fire and Rescue Department Operation Centre received an emergency call on the incident at 1.45pm.

“Twelve firefighters from the Larkin Fire station were deployed to the scene," Larkin Fire station chief Mohd Suhaimi Abdul Jamal said in a statement Thursday.

He said three machines – a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT), an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) and a Rapid Intervention Motorcycle (RIM) - were used in the operation.

“The fire was believed to have started when the car hit the house and the flames were put out using a hose from the FRT," said Mohd Suhaimi.

He added that the adult male driver managed to escape from the burning vehicle before the arrival of the firefighters.

Mohd Suhaimi said the operation led by Senior Fire Officer I Shahrol Suboh ended at 2.21pm and the cause of the fire and losses are still being investigated.

Meanwhile, in Batu Pahat, a double-storey shop located at Jalan Omar, Bandar Penggaram suffered 50% damage after a fire broke out on the premises.

“We received an emergency call at 1.27pm and deployed 20 firemen from the Batu Pahat and Penggaram fire stations to the location,’’ Batu Pahat Fire station chief Ayub Majid said.

He said the fire was believed to have started from the ground floor of the double-storey shop building where equipment and machines were used to produce vehicle plate numbers.

Ayub said the operation led by Senior Fire Officer II Abdul Ghafar Mahadi ended at 2.21pm and the cause of the fire and losses are still being investigated.
