Electricity tariff hike won't burden businesses, Anwar assures

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic) has assured that any increase in electricity tariffs will not burden the business community, with 85% of households continuing to receive subsidies.

Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, stated that any tariff hike in the second half of 2025 will not negatively impact the business community.

Speaking at the Chinese New Year celebration hosted by the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) today, he emphasized that low-income households will remain unaffected by the scheduled tariff review for that period.

Currently, the government provides electricity subsidies to more than 85% of households.

Electricity base tariffs in Malaysia are set by the Energy Commission under the Incentive-Based Regulation (IBR) framework and are reviewed every three years.

In addition to the base tariff, there is an Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT) mechanism reviewed every six months.

The ICPT adjusts electricity rates based on actual changes in fuel costs.

The next tariff review is scheduled for July 2025.
