14 ferried out of floods to sit for SPM

Help is on the way: Students from Tongod being moved to their school dormitories via boat.

KOTA KINABALU: A total of 14 students from Tongod were transferred out of their villages via boats by the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) as they will be sitting for their SPM examination at SMK Tongod today.

These students, who are from Kg Keramuak, Kg Kuala Keramuak, Kg Kenang-Kenangan and Kg Tenaga Baru, were transported to Kg Imbak before they were sent to their school dormitory.

Overall the floods in Sabah have receded in most areas but there are a couple of new places affected following heavy rain over the last few days.

From the 10 previously hit districts, only one relief centre remains open as of 5pm yesterday, which is in Tongod.

The number of victims still displaced in Tongod is 155 from 41 families.

However, a new temporary shelter has opened in Kinabatangan as of 4pm yesterday.

The number of victims seeking shelter here is still being updated, said the Sabah APM.

In all the affected districts, food baskets and other assistance are still being provided, especially for those who remain displaced.

Rescue agencies, including firemen, are still on a 24-hour lookout and alert for any eventualities.

On Saturday night, areas in Putatan, Lok Kawi and Kinarut on the west coast of Sabah were hit by flash floods with some areas experiencing landslips following a downpour.

The situation is reported to have improved yesterday.

Meanwhile, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd said it is giving rebates totalling RM10.2mil, to be credited directly to the registered consumers’ electricity bill accounts in stages, starting last month, Bernama reported.

Its chief executive officer Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said the rebate payment, amounting to 2.5% of the total electricity deposit, is in accordance with the Sabah Electricity Supply Enactment 2024.

“A total of 687,031 customers will receive the rebate this year,” he said in a statement.

He added that customers can obtain more information by visiting the nearest Sabah Electricity branch or by contacting the service line at 15444 or 088-515 000.

“They can also download the Sabah Electricity app on their smartphones to receive the latest updates on Sabah Electricity services,” he said.
