Half-price on the highways

PETALING JAYA: It will not be free but highway users will still get a reprieve – the toll on all highways will be reduced by 50% during the Chinese New Year festivities.

The reduced toll rate will only apply for Class One private vehicles at all toll plazas, except at entry points into the country like the Sultan Iskandar Building at the North-South Expressway and the Second Link at Tanjung Kupang, both in Johor.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi (pic) said the decision to reduce tolls by half was agreed upon during the Cabinet meeting yesterday.

The discounts would be valid for 48 hours from 12.01am next Monday to 11.59pm on Tuesday.

He said the government would pay an estimated RM20.08mil to compensate concessionaires for the discount.

“The discount is a continuation of the festive season toll assistance that has been provided by the government for all four major festive seasons in the peninsula since 2023.

“The government has spent a total of RM356.18mil in compensation for toll concessionaires during festive seasons from 2023 to last year,” he said in a statement.

On Tuesday, Nanta had said that 2024 would be the final year for the festive season toll exemptions as the Cabinet had decided to find a more targeted approach, which would be announced soon.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had also said on Jan 23 that the government was working on a more targeted approach for toll exemptions during festive seasons.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the toll exemptions should only be provided to the B40 and M40 groups, not to everyone.

The last time full toll exemptions were given was during Christmas last year.

Nanta advised all highway users to plan their journeys to avoid traffic congestion during the long holidays.

“Users are advised to download the MyPLUS-TTA app for a travel time advisory (TTA) to ensure a smooth driving experience so we can all safely reach our destinations this Chinese New Year.

“Road users are reminded to always comply with signage instructions and information displayed on the Variable Message System (VMS).

“Those using the Smart Lane are urged to signal early before entering the activated lane, drive within the specified speed limits, and stay alert to their surroundings,” he added.

Nanta also encouraged the public to check real-time traffic updates or incidents on highways via the official social media channels of the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), including Facebook (Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia), X (@LLMtrafik), and TikTok (@llmtrafik).

Highway users can also contact the LLM Traffic Management Centre at 1-800-88-7752 for the latest traffic updates or assistance.

To view real-time traffic conditions via CCTV on all highways, users can visit LLM’s website at https://www.llm.gov.my, as well as get live traffic updates which would be available through the LLM Info Trafik WhatsApp Channel.
