Transport Minister Anthony Loke - Bernama
IPOH: The government has no policy to revoke the driving licences of people certified as disabled, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
He said any decision regarding such cases would be made on a case-by-case basis by the Road Transport Department (JPJ).
He emphasised that JPJ could not arbitrarily revoke the driving licences of disabled individuals.
“The vast majority of disabled people are fully capable of driving or riding their vehicles.
“If there is a specific or isolated case involving a disabled driver, we will assess whether their licence should be revoked.
“However, I want to stress that this is not our policy,” he said after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of agreement between Ipoh Sentral Sdn Bhd and Country Annexe Sdn Bhd here yesterday.
Loke was responding to a statement by the National Road Users Association, which proposed that JPJ cancel the licences of individuals certified as mentally disabled. He said it was unfair to generalise all disabled individuals, as many could drive safely and were dependent on their licences for their livelihood.
“We have many e-hailing drivers among the disabled, including those who are deaf or mute, who can drive well,” he added.
