KUALA LUMPUR: The government’s commitment to provide funds for Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) will continue, says Anthony Loke.
The Transport Minister said that the government has consistently provided the university with annual funds worth RM40mil since 2023.
"For the past two and a half years, we have granted RM120mil to TAR UMT.
"As far as the current government is concerned, we do not have any issues with this granting of yearly allocation," he said during the cheque presentation ceremony here on Tuesday (Jan 21).
Loke was tasked by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also Finance Minister, to visit the university for the symbolic handover of yearly funds.
The RM40mil fund, he said, has already been provided through an online transfer.
TAR UMT board of governors chairman Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy said that the university is very grateful to receive the funds.
"The government has been helping us in the way of grants and non-grants, and because of that, it allows us to keep our fees very affordable and competitive," he said.
The affordable fees make it easier for young Malaysians, especially those from average-income families or very humble origins, to afford continuing their tertiary education, he said.
He said that TAR UMT now has 34,000 students spread over its main campus and other branches.
Also present were TAR UMT president Prof Datuk Dr Lee Sze Wei, TAR UMT Alumni Council deputy chairman Tan Chee Kian, and TAR UMT vice president assoc Prof Dr Chook Ka Joo.
