Pay attention to attorney background when hiring

PETALING JAYA: The public should take precautionary measures to avoid being victimised by rogue lawyers, say the police.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said people should check that the lawyers they choose are qualified and registered.

“They should perform such checks with the Bar Council online or by calling them.

“They should also be wary of lawyers who charge fees deemed too low or too good to be true as it might be a sign that something is (amiss).

“Always be careful of those who guarantee fast or sure resolution to a complicated case,” he told The Star yesterday.

Comm Ramli said before signing any contract or agreement with a lawyer, make sure you fully understand the terms.

“Don’t hesitate to seek an explanation for anything unclear and ensure all legal agreements are documented, such as fees, services being provided, and the lawyer’s responsibility.

“Always ask for a copy of documents about retaining the legal services,” he added.

Comm Ramli said clients should also monitor developments in their cases by communicating consistently with their lawyers.

“If a lawyer fails to give proper updates, the client has the right to demand an explanation.

“Consider opting for a different lawyer if you feel the current one is not handling the case properly,” he added.

He also urged the public to report to the authorities as soon as possible should they feel their lawyers have duped them.

“The police will investigate any criminal wrongdoing by the lawyer that may have occurred, while the Bar Council will focus on any infringement of professional ethics.”

Comm Ramli said in cases of funds management by lawyers, the public should understand how their funds will be used and channelled.

“Don’t let lawyers manage your funds without proper monitoring or written proof of how your money is used.

“If a lawyer is acting dodgy or suspicious, seek a second opinion from another lawyer. An ethical lawyer will assist in explaining any doubt you may have,” he said.
