Ex-Suhakam chairman Othman Hashim appointed Special Envoy to Myanmar


LANGKAWI: Former Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) chairman Tan Sri Othman Hashim has been appointed as the Special Envoy of the Asean Chair on Myanmar.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Othman’s appointment as the special envoy had received a consensus during the Asean Foreign Ministers’ Retreat (AMM) on Sunday (Jan 19).

Othman is the former secretary-general of the Foreign Ministry and he was a senior diplomat.

Othman first served as an Ambassador of Malaysia to Czech Republic from 2002 to 2005.

After that, he served as a deputy secretary general for management services and also the deputy secretary general for bilateral affairs with Wisma Putra.

From 2009 to 2012, Othman served as the Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, before being posted to Washington DC as the Ambassador of Malaysia to the United States in 2012.

After his stint in the US, Othman was appointed as Wisma Putra secretary-general on Sept 2013, which he served for over three years.
