Local man, 44, nabbed for smashing cars in Kuching housing area

KUCHING: Police have arrested a local man for damaging property at the Taman Sepawie residential area here.

Acting on intelligence, a team from the Gita police station detained the 44-year-old suspect at a house at Jalan Cenderawasih here on Thursday (Jan 16), Kuching police chief Asst Comm Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said.

He said initial investigations found that the man had used stones and flower pots to smash the windshields of two cars at Taman Sepawie between 2am and 2.30am on Wednesday (Jan 15).

"The suspect was also detained for an investigation into causing mischief by fire at the same area," Mohd Farhan said in a statement on Thursday.

He said the suspect, who tested positive for methamphetamine, has been remanded for further investigation under Section 427 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of five years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Mohd Farhan appealed to anyone with information on the incident to contact the Kuching police headquarters' control centre at 082-244 444 or investigating officer Insp Logeswara a/l Tharumalay@Krishnan at 018-291 4239.

He also reminded the public not to engage in unlawful activities or face stern action.

It was earlier reported that unknown individuals went on a rampage in the residential area, damaging the windshields of cars parked along the road.

According to Facebook user Jeffrey Sheffrie, Molotov cocktails were also hurled into a house compound, causing the property's front area and a car to catch fire.

He said firefighters arrived around 3am and quickly put out the flames.
