27 foreigners detained in raid on illegal transit home in Cheras

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 27 foreigners were detained following a raid at a transit home used by smugglers in Bandar Mahkota Cheras.

The anti-smuggling of migrants raid, codenamed "Ops Pintas," was conducted by the Bukit Aman CID Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) division (D3) with the Kajang district police headquarters at about 9pm on Tuesday (January 14).

Bukit Aman CID D3 principal assistant director Senior Asst Comm Soffian Santong said the raiding team detained 27 foreigners, consisting of 14 men and six women from Indonesia, along with five men and two women from Myanmar.

"An Indonesian woman was the caretaker of the transit home, while two Indonesian men were her assistants,” said SAC Soffian on Wednesday (Jan 15).

He added that they were detained under Section 26A of the Atipsom Act 2007 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act.

The remaining foreigners, aged between 21 and 54, were detained under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act, he said.

"All migrants were gathered at the transit home, guarded and managed by the three Indonesian suspects. They were provided food and accommodation there before they were smuggled out of Malaysia or sent to designated work locations," he said.

The transit home was rented by the caretaker, SAC Soffian said.

"Each migrant is charged RM30 per day for lodging and food. The investigation showed that each foreigner is charged between RM1,500 and RM3,200 to leave and enter Malaysia illegally," he said.
