Cops awaiting reports to determine what killed schoolgirl Yap

SHAH ALAM: Toxicology and post-mortem reports will determine whether teenager Yap Xin Yuan died due to an altercation or possible drug use, says the Selangor police chief.

Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said both reports were crucial in determining how the schoolgirl died.

“We have to wait for the toxicology report to know if the victim had taken drugs... we cannot ascertain now if she died of an overdose.

“We are also waiting for the post-mortem report on the cause of death. The condition of the body is making it harder for pathologists,” he told a press conference at the Selangor police contingent headquarters yesterday.

He was asked whether Yap, 15, could have died of a drug overdose before her body was dumped into the RTB Sungai Changgang in Banting.

As for the motive, Comm Hussein said police firmly believed her death was linked to her 16-year-old boyfriend.

“We are investigating further to find out whether there was a disagreement between them, or if her death was connected to drugs. That is why we have to wait for the lab results,” he said.

Comm Hussein said the police were also investigating who dumped Yap’s body into the river, whether it was her boyfriend alone or with accomplices.

“All three suspects detained, including the boyfriend, tested negative for drugs,” he said.

On claims that the boyfriend had confessed to the crime, Comm Hussein said: “There are parts of an investigation that we can reveal and others that we can’t.”

Several items were also seized in the investigation, he said, adding that the three suspects were still in custody.

On Thursday, police revealed that a decomposed body found in the river on Dec 28 had been identified as that of the teenager who was reported missing on Dec 19.
