Senior cop behind wheel of SUV in Jeram accident that killed biker

SHAH ALAM: A senior police officer from Bukit Aman was driving a sports utility vehicle (SUV) that collided with a motorcycle on Jalan Klang-Teluk Intan in Jeram, Kuala Selangor, resulting in the rider's death.

Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said police had recorded the statement of the officer, who was on holiday at the time of the incident.

He said based on a viral video, the officer may have lapsed into micro-sleep (sudden sleep lasting a few seconds).

"The officer was also injured and is still being treated in hospital," he said, adding that the policeman tested negative for drugs.

"We will examine the need to make an arrest or otherwise.

"We will complete the investigation with witnesses to the incident, dashcam footage obtained and closed circuit camera (CCTV) footage from a house in the area," he said at the Selangor police headquarters here on Friday (Jan 3).

Hussein also said the investigation would be conducted fairly and transparently according to the Road Transport Act before the case is referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action.

It was reported that a man had died when his motorcycle was hit by a car coming from the opposite direction in Kuala Selangor at around 6pm on Tuesday (Dec 31).

Both vehicles crashed into a ditch on the left of the road and the 57-year-old victim died at the scene. – Bernama
