Two students die in crash

JASIN: Two students from Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) were killed while two others were injured after their car rammed into a guard rail at KM187.6 of the North-South Expressway.

Jasin OCPD Deputy Supt Ahmad Jamil Radzi said it happened at 6.20am yesterday on the northbound stretch.

The deceased were identified as Nurul Syafiqah Nasruddin from Kampung Ulu Rokan in Gemencheh, Negri Sembilan, and Nurhanis Afryna Azizan from Felda Selancar in Muadzam Shah, Pahang.

The two injured victims were identified as Nur Hanis Suraya Supiyan from Kuantan, Pahang, and Azwalidiya Azman from Port Klang, Selangor.

DSP Ahmad Jamil said the deceased were both 19 while the injured were 20 and 21.

The car driven by Nur Hanis Suraya skidded and veered to the emergency lane.

Nurul Syafiqah, who was in the front passenger seat, and Nurhanis Afryna, who was in the rear seat, were killed on the spot.

“The driver suffered injuries on her leg while the other passenger sustained minor injuries,” said DSP Ahmad Jamil.

The four were on their way from Johor to Melaka.

An investigation has been initiated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Melaka Fire and Rescue Department officer Mohd Hanif Mustafa said they received a distress call at 6.23am and personnel from the Jasin Bestari fire station was dispatched to the scene.

He said the injured victims were rushed to Hospital Melaka.
