Anwar has 'fruitful, engaging' discussion with Thaksin

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has met former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the informal adviser to Malaysia’s Asean chairmanship, to discuss key issues including the economy and new technologies.

“Our conversation centred on critical regional priorities: revitalising economies, leveraging emerging technologies, fostering peace in southern Thailand, and addressing the Myanmar crisis,” Anwar said in a Facebook post on Friday (Dec 27).

He also described the meeting as “a pleasure” and an “engaging, wide-ranging and fruitful discussion”.

The meeting also discussed the capacity of Thaksin’s position as adviser and forging closer bilateral ties between Malaysia and Thailand.

Anwar said Thaksin’s network across the region and his unique expertise will open opportunities for Malaysia and Asean, and address challenges the region faces.

“We also discussed ways to strengthen the already robust bilateral ties between Malaysia and Thailand, aligning them with the vision for sustainable development and regional cohesion that I share with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

“Thaksin and I share the belief that Malaysia and Thailand could accomplish much more together, not only for our respective nations but for the region as a whole.

"We are committed to turning that vision into reality,” he said.
