14 items under Christmas price control scheme from Dec 23

KUALA LUMPUR: Fourteen controlled items will be gazetted under the 2024 Christmas Festive Season Maximum Price Control Scheme from Monday (Dec 23).

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the scheme will be enforced for five days under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011.

"The items listed are essential goods for Christmas, including imported bone-in mutton; live old chickens (Sarawak only); round cabbages imported from Indonesia and China (excluding Beijing cabbage); carrots; and tomatoes.

"Other controlled items include red chillies, green bell peppers, imported large red onions, large yellow onions, potatoes imported from China, chicken wings, live pigs (at farm level only), pork belly, and pork meat and fat,” he told a press conference to announce the scheme and the Rahmah Madani Sales Programme in Bandar Baru Sentul here on Friday (Dec 20).

Armizan said the scheme was to help the public obtain essential goods at controlled prices and avoid sudden increases.

He said these items will have pink price tags to make it easier for consumers to identify goods under the scheme, and may be checked through the ministry's website.

In addition, enforcement officers across the country will be at strategic locations such as public markets, farmers' markets and shopping centres for inspection and enforcement purposes, he added.

Armizan said 11,240 events under the Rahmah Madani Sales Programme have been held across the country so far this year, with 670 scheduled for the Christmas and year-end period.

The ministry was aiming to organise 15,000 such events next year, he added.

"We found that this is a platform that greatly helps reduce the people's burden... with the Budget 2025 allocation, we will continue to implement it in all parliamentary and state constituencies," he added. – Bernama
