Committee to clean up image of Kota Kinabalu Central Market

KOTA KINABALU: A committee will be formed to look into issues tarnishing the allure of the Kota Kinabalu Central Market, says Datuk Seri Christina Liew.

She said the presence of street kids begging for money is among the issues as well as a rat infestation.

"This is damaging the image of the Kota Kinabalu Central Market and hurting our tourism industry," said the Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister.

She said a committee would be formed to address these issues, chaired by the ministry's permanent secretary and include representatives from the Immigration Department, Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), and the police.

"We will meet to discuss effective solutions," Liew said after an inspection at the market.

Meanwhile, food stall operator VY Ho said his business relies on Chinese tourists and feared that these could drive them away.

He also said he also faced issues of leaking roofs, old electrical wiring and frequent water cuts.

Similarly, operator Annie Dusin said that there are additional issues such as broken fans, poor lighting, and rainwater leaking into the premises.

Liew then said that these complaints would be brought to DBKK's attention to improve market facilities and ensure the space remains inviting for both tourists and locals.
