Johor Maqis seizes nearly six tonnes of wood products imported without a permit

JOHOR BARU: Almost 6,000kg of wood products worth RM75,000 from China have been seized at the Pasir Gudang port here.

The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department's (Maqis) Johor director Edie Putra Md Yusof said the wood-based decorative items were confiscated during an inspection at about 4pm on Tuesday (Dec 10).

"Upon inspection, we found that no import permit had been obtained for the 5,913kg of goods from China.

"Further checks also revealed that the products had not undergone any treatment as required under import regulations," he said in a statement on Friday (Dec 13).

Edie Putra noted that importing agricultural products without a Maqis permit is an offence under Section 11(1) of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011.

If convicted, offenders may be fined up to RM100,000.00 or jailed for up to six years, or both.

"Maqis is committed to ensuring that plants, animals, carcasses, fish, agricultural products, soil and microorganisms entering the country are free from pests, diseases and contaminants," Edie Putra added.
