KUALA LUMPUR: Perak’s number of flood victims increased on Thursday (Dec 12), as the flood situation in Terengganu and Pahang improved with lower numbers of evacuees at relief centres in both states.
In PERAK, the number of flood victims rose to 225 people from 67 families in the districts of Perak Tengah and Manjung, compared to 34 in the morning of the same day.
The Perak State Disaster Management Committee secretariat reported that 191 victims from 56 families were housed at the SK Beruas relief centre, while 34 victims from 11 families were at SK Teluk Kepayang.
The Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) noted that the water level of Sungai Rui in Hulu Perak had reached a dangerous level at 165.69m, exceeding the normal level of 165.10m. Meanwhile, Sungai Perak in Perak Tengah and Bagan Datuk remain at the alert level, recording 6.48m and 1.85m above their normal levels of 5.5m and -1m respectively.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has forecast continuous rain in the Hulu Perak area until Friday (Dec 13).
In JOHOR, the number of evacuees remains unchanged at 139 from 38 families at three relief centres in two affected districts.
State Disaster Management Committee chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said 40 people from 12 families were sheltered at the Balai Raya Kampung Batu Badak relief centre in Segamat.
Another 45 people from 14 families were at Dewan Komuniti Kampung Tasek, while 54 people from 12 families were taking shelter at SK Simpang Lima Darat in Tangkak.
Three rivers in Segamat have exceeded the warning levels: Sungai Muar in Kampung Awat (19.60m), Sungai Muar in Buloh Kasap (8.61m), and Sungai Muar in Jeti Kampung Tekam (3.53m).
Weather conditions in eight districts of Johor are expected to remain clear, with overcast skies in Tangkak and rain forecasted in Kota Tinggi on Thursday.
In TERENGGANU, the second wave of floods is almost fully resolved, with the number of evacuees decreasing to 230 from 58 families at four relief centres as of 4pm, compared to 3,951 on Thursday morning.
The Terengganu State Disaster Management Committee secretariat said that all victims in Dungun were allowed to return home at 2 pm, leaving only 230 evacuees from 58 families in Kemaman still at relief centres, including SK Kampung Baru Kerteh, Balai JPKK Beris Nenas, Balai Raya Meraga Beris, and Balai Raya Padang Kemunting.
In PAHANG, flood conditions have improved, with two relief centres in Jerantut housing 40 people closed at 2pm. However, one relief centre was opened in Temerloh to accommodate a single evacuee.
The publicinfobanjir.water.gov.my portal showed that Sungai Pahang at the waterfront station in Bera remains above the danger level at 0.19m, although the trend is declining. - Bernama
