Factory supervisor, manager arrested for river pollution in Pasir Gudang

JOHOR BARU: The supervisor and manager of a factory have been arrested for alleged pollution of a river in the Pasir Gudang industrial area.

Johor Environment Department (DOE) director Dr Mohd Famey Yusoff said the duo were arrested on Wednesday (Dec 11) under Section 37C of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 for further investigation.

"Following public complaints about pollution at Sungai Buloh, the Pasir Gudang DOE investigated an oleochemical-based factory.

"Investigations revealed that brown effluent was being discharged from the factory's effluent treatment system, which was not functioning," he said in a statement here on Thursday (Dec 12).

He noted that the investigation was conducted together with the police and the Pasir Gudang City Council (MBPG).

"Effluent samples were taken and sent to the Chemistry Department in Petaling Jaya for analysis.

"A prohibition order on equipment operation (POK) was also issued to the facility to stop the pollution," he said, adding that the investigation is being carried out under the Environmental Quality (Industrial Effluent) Regulations 2009.
