Trader tried over fatal crash


JEMPOL: A 59-year-old petty trader has claimed trial at the Magistrate’s Court here to a charge of reckless driving that caused the death of a 17-year-old.G. Chandra pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to her before Magistrate Norshazwani Ishak.

She was charged with driving her truck dangerously, leading to a collision with the deceased’s motorcycle at around 12.15am at Jalan Bahau-Rompin on Oct 27.

Chandra was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless and dangerous driving.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Huzaifah Abdul Talib asked the court to set bail at RM8,000 pending mention.

However, the accused, who was unrepresented, asked for lower bail as her income is inconsistent.

She told the court that she also has to provide for her family and her husband who is unable to work due to kidney issues.

Magistrate Norshazwani then allowed bail of RM4,000 in one surety and ordered that her driver’s licence be suspended till the case is disposed of.

The court fixed Jan 15 for mention and to allow the accused to appoint a lawyer.
