Jesselton Hotel celebrates 70th anniversary, Sabah minister recalls nostalgic past

KOTA KINABALU: For many Sabahans, the iconic Jesselton Hotel is more than a landmark, it’s a cherished part of their personal history.

Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew is among those who have fond memories of the grand old establishment.

Liew recalled how as a teenager, she and her friends would save for weeks to enjoy a Sunday meal at the Jesselton Hotel.

"Back then, as students with limited pocket money, we would treat ourselves to chicken rice and ice cream here. These were among the first such offerings in town, and we treasured the experience,” she said beaming.

Liew noted that the milestone honours more than just the passage of time, it commemorates the memories embedded within the hotel’s walls.

“I am truly delighted to celebrate this historic hotel’s 70th anniversary. It stands as a testament to resilience and success, making Sabah proud,” she said during the hotel’s 70th anniversary celebration on Friday (Dec 6).

The hotel’s British-style architecture, with its distinct floors, evokes nostalgia for Liew and many others.

“This place holds a special spot in my heart. It was part of my growing-up years. Even now, my children visit whenever they’re in town,” she shared.

Hearing the story of the hotel’s journey, from its humble beginnings under the stewardship of the late Mr Wong to the present day, adds to its charm.

“Listening to how the hotel owner Wong Kah shared how his late father, Datuk Wong Tze Fatt, built this hotel and witnessing its evolution is truly moving,” Liew said.

Despite decades of change and recent challenges, such as the pandemic, the Jesselton Hotel, which was built in 1954, has remained resilient.

“This hotel has faced challenges yet continues to thrive. I am genuinely happy for its success and honoured to be part of this celebration,” she added.

As the Jesselton Hotel embarks on its next chapter, it remains not just a place to stay, but a cornerstone of memories for generations of Sabahans and visitors alike.
