Tycoon and philanthropist Ananda laid to rest


KUALA LUMPUR: Tycoon and philanthropist T. Ananda Krishnan (pic) was cremated at the Loke Yew Crematorium here.

His remains were taken from his residence in Jalan Berhala, Brickfields, at about 9.45am yesterday for cremation, following the completion of religious rituals.

According to Astro Awani, the ceremony was attended by family members and close acquaintances, including former Transport Minister Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik.

On Tuesday, hundreds turned up at Ananda’s Brickfields residence to pay their last respects during the wake from 5pm to 9pm.

Among those at the wake were former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, his wife, Tun Dr Hasmah Mohd Ali, and son Tan Sri Mokhzani, and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department M. Kulasegaran.

Ananda, who was born in Brickfields, died at the age of 86 in Switzerland last Thursday.

Estimated to be worth US$5.8bil (RM25.7bil), Ananda often made it to the annual Forbes list of wealthiest people, being ranked as the third richest person in Malaysia.

He founded his flagship investment company, Usaha Tegas Sdn Bhd, in 1984.

His other companies include TGV Cinemas, Maxis Bhd, Astro Holdings, Bumi Armada, Measat Satellite Systems, and Tanjong Plc.
