Youth nabbed for allegedly stealing from Batu Pahat surau donation boxes

BATU PAHAT: Police have arrested a local youth for allegedly stealing money from donation boxes placed in suraus (prayer halls) around here.

Batu Pahat OCPD Asst Comm Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said on Nov 23 at around 1.49am, police spotted a closed-circuit television camera (CCTV) footage on TikTok, which shows a man walking around a surau’s praying area before breaking a donation box.

“On the same day, police received four reports lodged by various surau committees in Semerah and Parit Yaani here about similar incidents where we carry out the investigation under Section 380 of the Penal Code.

“Based on information that has been obtained and intelligence gathering, police arrested a 35-year-old man at around 12.10pm on Nov 25 in Parit Sulong here.

“Police also seized some of his clothing he allegedly wore during the incident, which was recorded through the CCTV,” he said here on Monday (Dec 2).

ACP Shahrulanuar Mushaddat added that with the suspect under remand until Tuesday (Dec 3), the police have solved five other cases involving stealing money from donation boxes at suraus and house break-ins around Semerah and Parit Sulong.

He urged those with information regarding this case to lodge a report at the nearest police station or contact Batu Pahat police district headquarters hotline at 07-4343999.
