Trader cheated of RM14,000 in ‘discounted’ foodstuff scam

JEMPOL: A 54-year-old trader, who believed he had found a good deal on foodstuff online, ended up losing over RM14,000 in a scam.

Jempol OCPD Supt Hoo Chang Hook said the victim had on Dec 1 come across an advertisement on Facebook offering foodstuff such as milk and flour at a discount.

"He was then asked to download an application where he had to enter his personal and bank account details including his PIN.

"After having done that, he realised that a total of RM14,274.55 was withdrawn from his bank account in stages without his knowledge," he said in a statement.

The bank told him that his money was transferred to other accounts as well as e-wallet accounts.

"Realising that he had been scammed, the victim lodged a report," he said.

Supt Hoo said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a jail term of between one and 10 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction.
