RM8mil budget for pedestrian bridge reconstruction in Melaka raises eyesbrows

MELAKA: The state opposition leader Dr Mohd Yadzil Yaakub is questioning the RM8mil budget for reconstructing an overhead pedestrian bridge that connects the Melaka Sentral bus terminal with hypermarkets on Jalan Tun Razak here.

Bemban assemblyman from Bersatu claimed that the bridge was mostly used by foreigners and the construction cost seemed overpriced.

"The state government should have used the money spent on flood mitigation projects and other beneficial programmes instead.

"The bridge is still in good condition," he said on Monday (Dec 2).

Dr Mohd Yadzil said he also knew about the hefty cost of reconstructing the bridge from an article.

He also said that the state government must publicise the tender process and the details of the company awarded the project.

Meanwhile, Dr Mohd Yadzil is also seeking updates on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) investigation into two illegal advertising boards that collapsed on July 14.

He said MACC arrested a director and a senior manager of an advertising company to aid in investigations into a case involving submitting false reports on billboard installation work to the state government agency since 2021 on Sept 11.

"However, there has been no news of progress since. Why were no officials from the local council who approved the projects arrested?" he said.

The two billboards in Bachang and Banda Hilir that collapsed in July did not have licenses from the local authority.
