728 displaced in Segamat due to floods


JOHOR BARU: A total of 728 people from 199 families in Segamat are still being sheltered at 17 temporary relief centres (PPS) in the district.

The state disaster management committee said as of 8pm on Sunday (Dec 1), the highest number of victims is at SK Spang Loi PPS with 182 people.

“There are also 131 people at Balairaya Kampung Padang Kiambang and 110 people from Dewan Kampung Tandong,” the committee said in a statement on Sunday.

One PPS had also opened in Batu Pahat after a fire broke out in Kampung Parit Lapis Semarang.

“The incident occurred at 9am on Sunday, and 15 victims from three families were then relocated to a PPS,” it said.

Meanwhile, Ayer Hitam Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Mohd Shamin Mohamed Salikin said that the fire had damaged a rented house

“There were 33 tenants inside the house, which was divided into eight rooms.

“The fire has destroyed 70% of the rented rooms,” he said, adding that there were no casualties involved and the operation ended at 11am.
