Heavy rain in Klang causes floods, 159 victims moved to evacuation centres

KLANG: Continuous rain in Meru and Kapar from last night (Nov 28) has resulted in massive floods, with overflowing drains inundating homes and leading to 159 victims from 39 families being moved to two evacuation centres, SK Binjai and Bukit Kapar Community Centre.

Selangor’s permanent committee chairman for disaster management, Mohd Najwan Halimi, said two evacuation centres were opened, with 21 flood victims from five families housed at the Bukit Kapar Community Centre, while the SK Binjai centre accommodated 138 victims from 34 affected families.

Firemen from Kapar, Bukit Jelutong, and the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) Swift Team (Pantas) responded to the flood situation.

Najwan stated that the flooding was caused by incessant heavy rainfall over a short period in the upstream undulating areas, alongside an insufficient internal drainage network unable to handle the high volume of surface runoff.

"We have found that the drainage network along Jalan Kempas could not accommodate the water flow from higher ground in Bukit Cerakah and Bukit Kapar. Water levels rose at approximately 7pm yesterday (Nov 28) to a height of 0.1m to 0.3m," he added.

Najwan estimated that about 50 houses were affected.

"We need to take immediate short-term measures that include planning a more systematic drainage system for residential areas to channel water into the main drains under the Irrigation and Drainage Department, increasing the frequency of drainage maintenance, and upgrading Kampung Bukit Kapar’s drainage network," he said.

Meanwhile, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (Operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar stated that fire and rescue stations are monitoring the flood situation.
