ALOR SETAR: A total of 34 temporary relief centres have been activated in Kedah after five districts flooded.

State Civil Defence Force (APM) deputy director Major Mohd Suhaimi Mohd Zain said as of 8am Friday (Nov 29) 4,378 people from 1,432 families were seeking shelter at these centres.

"The districts affected are Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Sik and Padang Tetap," he said.

Suhaimi said Kubang Pasu is the worst-hit district with 1,708 victims from 600 families in 13 centres.

This was followed by Padang Terap with 1,145 victims from 338 families at nine centres, and Sik with 361 victims from 124 families in six centres.

In Kota Setar, 735 evacuees from 230 families were relocated to three centres while 429 victims from 140 families were taken to three centres after their homes were flooded.

Suhaimi said the flood has affected more than 60 villages in the five districts after heavy rain over the last two days.

He said at least eight locations near rivers in the state are in the red zone after their levels showed sharp increases.

"Villagers are advised to follow instructions to evacuate when necessary. Please prepare all important documents if the situation worsens," he said.

Suhaimi added that the situation was under control for now.

Meanwhile in PERLIS, 488 victims from 145 families were evacuated to four centres in Padang Besar, Kangar and Atau.

Perlis APM operations officer Capt Saifuddin Abdullah said one centre each was activated in Padang Besar and Kangar while two were opened in Arau as of 8am Friday.

"The weather has improved, but the victims will be staying at the centres for now," he added.
