Body of missing woman found in Gerik river


IPOH: The body of 20-year-old Nur Arina Azizan, who was swept away by strong currents while playing in Sungai Air Berok, Kampung Kerunai, Gerik, has been found.

Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations division) Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad stated that the victim was discovered at 4pm on Tuesday (Nov 19), marking the third day of the search and rescue operation.

"The body was found caught on a tree branch in the water, near the riverbank in Sungai Rui, approximately 7km from where she was initially swept away in Sungai Air Berok," he said in a statement.

Sabarodzi mentioned that the search and rescue operation, which began on Sunday, was paused at 7pm and resumed on Monday at about 8am, concluding on Tuesday at 5.30pm.

The search operation was divided into 13 groups along the river from Sungai Beruk to Dataran Loma.

"The body was brought to a nearby jetty in Kampung Dusun and handed over to the police for further action.

"The deceased was then taken to Gerik Hospital," he added.

On Sunday (Nov 17), it was reported that Nur Arina Azizan had been playing in the waters with her relatives before being swept away by strong currents at about 3.10pm.

She was on a float with her 48-year-old mother and several others when she was swept away, while her mother was rescued and brought to the riverbank.
