Senior citizen falls into well and drowns in Rantau Panjang

RANTAU PANJANG: A senior citizen has died after falling into a well in Kampung Tasek Bakong here.

In the 6.30am incident on Sunday (Nov 17), the victim, Bahrum Ismail, 64 was drawing water from the 4m-deep well for early morning prayers when he fell in.

His neighbour, Mohd Shamsudin Pa'sar, 50 said it was the victim's daily routine.

He said he stopped by the house and Bahrum's son told him he had fallen into the well.

Mohd Shamsudin told Sinar Harian he immediately called the 999 number to seek help.

He said the victim survived the initial fall and called out to his son to throw him a rope but attempts at rescue were unsuccessful.

Rantau Panjang Fire and Rescue operations senior officer Azmi Jaafar said they received a call at 6.52pm and rushed to the location with seven firemen.

"The victim had already drowned. We brought out the victim in 30 minutes using a rope," he said, adding that the body was handed over to the police for further action.
