Dungun court awaits mental health report in UiTM students collision case

DUNGUN: The magistrate's court here is informed that the woman charged with three counts of hitting four Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Dungun campus students on Oct 9 remains at Permai Hospital in Johor Baru for mental health observation.

State Prosecutor Azizan Abdullah made this known at the case mention for the accused, Norizan Ismail, 49, before Magistrate Nur Amira Fatihah Osman on Sunday (Nov 17).

According to Sinar Harian Azizan stated during the proceedings that a full report on Norizan's mental health status is still pending

"The accused has no prior record of psychiatric treatment, so the hospital has requested an extension of the detention order under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

"The accused was not brought in today. Therefore, we request another date for the mention (of the psychiatric report)," he said.

The accused's lawyer, Norhabibah Norulalzahar, confirmed this information.

After hearing this, Magistrate Nur Amira Fatihah Osman set Dec 17 for a further mention of the case.

In previous proceedings, Norizan, a mother of three, was ordered to undergo a mental evaluation at Permai Hospital, Johor Baru for a month.

On Oct 15, Norizan was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code at the Dungun magistrate's court with three counts of causing the death of four UiTM Dungun students on Oct 9.

According to the charges, she is accused of murdering three students, Muhammad Akmal Md Tukirin, 25, Ku Adib Aizad Ku Azmi, 20, and Khairil Jamaludin, 20.

The offence is said to have occurred at Jalan Pantai, in front of UiTM Dungun at 7.35pm.

If found guilty, the accused faces the death penalty or imprisonment of not less than 30 years and not more than 40 years, and if not sentenced to death, shall also receive not less than 12 strokes of the cane.

However, no plea was recorded from the accused after the charges were read out.

In the incident on Oct 9, the woman, driving a sports utility vehicle (SUV), crashed into two motorcycles ridden by the four students who were returning to campus after participating in recreational activities and having dinner.

Three of the deceased were two Bachelor of Accountancy students, Ku Adib Aizad and Khairil Anwar, and a Bachelor of Food Service Management student, Muhammad Akmal.

Another injured victim in the accident was Bachelor of Accountancy student, Muhammad Ammar Danish Mohd Ridhuan, 20.
