PUTRAJAYA: Following the implementation of dedicated train coaches for female passengers, Malaysia is expanding its safety initiatives to include women-only e-hailing rides, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
Speaking at the Wanita DAP congress on Sunday (Sept 6), Loke stated that he has actively encouraged e-hailing providers to offer specialised services allowing female passengers to request women drivers.
Furthermore, Loke revealed that he urged e-hailing giant Grab to expand its newly introduced carpooling features to cater exclusively to female users.
“In my discussions with Grab following their recent launch of a carpooling feature, I proposed a system strictly for women, where both the driver and the passengers are female,” Loke said. “This service would be strictly for women, excluding male passengers entirely.”
The Transport Minister highlighted that sexual harassment remains a prominent issue and source of complaints among public transport commuters, particularly within overcrowded train carriages.
Grab recently rolled out its initial "Women-Only Rides (Beta)" feature across select areas in Malaysia. The feature matches female riders with female driver-partners, though it is currently limited to advance bookings.
