Melaka court sets Jan 14 for next mention of trial of caregiver accused of murdering baby

ALOR GAJAH: A Magistrate’s Court here has set Jan 14, 2025 as the new mention date in a case involving a caregiver facing charges of allegedly murdering an eight-month-old baby boy.

Magistrate Dr Teoh Shu Yee set the date after Deputy Public Prosecutor Fiqri Hakim Zamri requested a new date, explaining that the prosecution had yet to receive the post-mortem and chemical analysis reports.

Earlier, the accused, Nor Afifah Abdullah Shuhaimi, 34, arrived at the court complex in a police vehicle and was represented by lawyer Farid Aziz.

Several individuals believed to be family members of the accused were also seen at the court complex.

Nor Afifah is accused of murdering Muhammad Al Fateh Amri Mohd Fikry Amri at the Taska Anak Pintar Soleha Child Care Centre, Jalan Kelemak Utama 3, Taman Kelemak Utama, on Sept 6, between 7.30am and 8.30am.

The accused, who is also a mother of three, is charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment for 30 to 40 years, with mandatory whipping of not less than 12 strokes if the death penalty is not imposed.

The baby died after the accused allegedly swaddled him, shoved a milk bottle into his mouth, covered it with cloth, and smothered the baby with a pillow.

The victim's parents, Major Mohd Fikry Amri Abd Halim and Sabrina Hakiem Zaini, both 39, were devastated by the loss of their firstborn, especially after they had waited 13 years to have a child.
