Muar MP files emergency motion to discuss UPNM bullying incidents in Dewan Rakyat

KUALA LUMPUR: Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has filed an emergency motion for the Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) bullying cases to be discussed in the Dewan Rakyat.

The motion, dated Nov 11, was for the House to discuss the systemic bullying in UPNM.

Syed Saddiq requested for the motion to be heard in the House urgently as it involves the lives and safety of students.

Syed Saddiq said, in the motion, that bullying cases continued to persist in the university despite a previous fatal incident.

On Nov 8, a cadet from the university claimed trial at the Sessions Court here for allegedly causing hurt to his junior using a steam iron.

Amirul Iskandar Norhanizan, 22, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him by the interpreter before Judge Egusra Ali.

It was reported on Sunday (Nov 10) that another case of alleged bullying leading to injury at UPNM had come to light.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa had said that a report was lodged on Nov 8 at around 8.40pm.

The report stated that the victim, a Year 1 student at the university, had been injured on Oct 21 after roll call at the field.

Police have recorded statements from nine people in the investigation into the latest bullying case at the university.

Comm Rusdi said the statements were obtained from the 19-year-old male victim and eight others after the report was lodged on Nov 8.
