Fadhlina rules out return of UPSR, PT3 exams

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite calls to bring back the UPSR and PT3 examinations, Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry will not revert to the former assessment system.

The Education Minister said the question of bringing back the now abolished exams was no longer relevant.

“Just because UPSR and PT3 had been abolished does not mean there are no more examinations,” she said while winding up her ministerial speech on the Supply Bill 2025 in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Nov 11).

She said instead the Academic Session Final Test (UASA) will be enhanced.

MPs including Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis@Fakharudy (Warisan-Kota Belud) and Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari (PH-Sungai Petani had called for the return of the Year Six and Form Three examination.

Previously, educators and parent groups said the reintroduction of major examinations such as the UPSR and PT3 should only be considered if the assessments are of substance and quality.

They cautioned against any “quick fix” solutions and over-reliance on such assessments that may not appropriately evaluate students’ knowledge and competencies.

Introduced in 2022, UASA is a test given at the end of the academic year to strengthen classroom-based assessment and school-based assessment.
