Stronger safety net in the works

PETALING JAYA: Targeted assistance programmes will be refined to strengthen the social safety net and manage rising living costs, safeguarding stability and public well-being, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said Malaysians are facing growing global uncertainties, including economic pressures, climate change, rapid developments in artificial intelligence and increasingly complex regional geopolitical dynamics while the effects are being felt across the world.

“In navigating these challenges, the nation must chart its course wisely through sound policies and practical measures that preserve stability and ease the burden on the rakyat,” said Anwar.

He said this in his speech at the investiture ceremony held in conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia’s official birthday celebration. Also in attendance was Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia.

Anwar also assured that the government would manage rising living costs and continue improving access to healthcare and education.

“Among the initiatives introduced are prudent fiscal measures, the targeted subsidy mechanism for RON95 fuel and the Budi Madani programme.

“Fortunately, amid these challenges, the national economy continues to record encouraging growth,” he said.

“Domestic and foreign investments have risen, unemployment remains low and international investor confidence in Malaysia continues to strengthen.”

He added that prudent fiscal reforms, the empowerment of small and medium enterprises, and the digital transformation agenda have opened up greater opportunities for quality employment, particularly for the younger generation.

“Malaysians will continue to uphold unwavering loyalty to His Majesty and strengthen our collective resolve and efforts in pursuit of the nation’s continued progress and prosperity,” said Anwar.

He said the government would continue its efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and uphold the rule of law, in line with Sultan Ibrahim’s emphasis on good governance and curbing the concentration of wealth among a select few.

“The government remains committed to implementing fair policies and ensuring equitable distribution across all states and regions, particularly for the poor and marginalised,” he said.

Anwar also conveyed his highest appreciation to the King for his patronage and wisdom in guiding the nation under the principles of constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy.

He said that under His Majesty’s patronage, the government continues to move forward with dedication and confidence in carrying out its responsibilities to govern the country.

“The government stands firm through the loyalty and unity of the people, who are united in their resolve to build the nation despite storms and racial sentiments.

“It is this wisdom inherited from our forefathers and independence fighters that gave rise to the Federal Constitution, which provides for a system that justifies the existence of the monarchy as the protector of Islam while guaranteeing justice and equality for all citizens,” he said.

Anwar also expressed his gratitude for Sultan Ibrahim’s reign, describing His Majesty as a symbol of unity and national dignity.

He also prayed for Their Majesties to be blessed with good health, well-being and continued wisdom in carrying out their duties.

“The people will continue to pledge their unwavering loyalty to His Majesty and strengthen their collective resolve and efforts towards the nation’s progress and prosperity,” he said.
