Sister’s call precedes horror

GEORGE TOWN: Just moments after a phone call with her brother, Khadijah Ibrahim received another call – this time bearing the news that he had died.

“I spoke to Zulkifli on the phone at 12.47pm on Thursday. A few minutes later, I found out he died,” Khadijah, 64, recalled.

“We didn’t speak for long as he mentioned he had another incoming call.”

Khadijah said she found it odd that her brother had called but did not say much.

“He then said, ‘My daughter is calling; something’s going on.’

“I ended the call without giving it much thought,” she said when met at the Penang Hospital Forensic Medical Department yesterday.

Moments later, Khadijah’s mother called to inform her of Zulkifli’s death.

“I couldn’t believe it. My heart shattered because I had just spoken to him,” Khadijah said.

Zulkifli, 62, was found dead in a pool of his own blood, alongside the body of his 30-year-old daughter Siti Zulaila, at the lift foyer on the ground floor of their apartment at 1.15pm on Thursday.

A 32-year-old man was also found unconscious at the scene with knife wounds.

Police suspect the man murdered the father and daughter before turning the knife on himself.

The suspect, who remains in stable condition, was remanded for seven days as investigations into the double murder continue.

Zulkifli had worked as a personal driver, while Siti Zulaila was employed at a hardware store.

Khadijah described her brother as a kind person who was beloved by all in the family.

“He was a good brother, never raised his voice, and was close to all of our siblings,” she added.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

“We have arrested the suspect and seized the murder weapon.

“The case is considered solved, and we are now working to determine the motive,” he said.
