PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds across Johor, Sarawak, Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan, effective until 4pm on Friday (Aug 28).
In Peninsular Malaysia, the weather alert affects southern Johor, specifically Pontian, Kulai, Johor Bahru and Kota Tinggi.
Over in East Malaysia, severe weather is expected across several divisions in Sarawak, including Bintulu (Bintulu and Sebauh), Miri (Miri, Subis, Beluru and Marudi), and Mukah (Mukah, Dalat and Matu).
In Sabah, the alert covers Pedalaman (Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Membakut, Keningau, Tambunan and Tenom) and Pantai Barat (Papar, Penampang, Putatan, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Kota Belud), alongside WP Labuan.
MetMalaysia issues these warnings when there are signs indicating a thunderstorm with a rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that is imminent or expected to occur for more than one hour.
A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning that is valid for a period not exceeding six hours for any single release.
The notice was officially issued by the department at 12.50pm on Friday.
