KUALA LUMPUR: A special month-long police operation on motorcycles has reduced the number of related accidents by 10.1% from last year, says Bukit Aman.

Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the operation was conducted from Aug 12 to Sept 12.

"A total of 2,461 accidents involving motorcycles were recorded during this period.

"It is a reduction of 274 cases or 10.1% from 2,735 in the same period last year," he told a press conference after the department's monthly assembly on Tuesday (Nov 5).

Comm Yusri said fatal accidents involving motorcycles also saw a 26% drop during this period.

"A total of 321 fatal accidents (involving motorcycles) were recorded this year. It is a reduction of 113 cases from 434 last year," he said.

The special operation, conducted nationwide, involved all police state and district contingents.

"It aimed to reduce the number of accidents involving motorcycles, especially fatal accidents.

"It has been able to reduce the number significantly," he said.

Comm Yusri added that the department will continue to conduct operations to reduce the number of road deaths, especially involving motorcyclists and pillion riders.

"We advise all road users to adhere to traffic regulations.

"Parents also play an important part in monitoring the activities of their children to keep them from getting involved in unlawful activities such as illegal racing," he said.
