Northeast monsoon: Be alert to weather conditions, alerts, says Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR: The public is reminded to remain attentive to current weather conditions and follow the instructions of the authorities to ensure their safety and that of their families as the northeast monsoon season begins.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also advised people to stay aware and be prepared for any circumstances during the monsoon season, which is expected to last until next year.

As chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee, he warned of potential flooding due to heavy rainfall in low-lying areas and near rivers in the east coast states of the Peninsula, Sarawak and Sabah.

"For the latest information on weather conditions and disaster warnings, visit the official website of the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) at www.met.gov.my," he said in a Facebook post on Tuesday (Nov 5).

On Nov 1, MetMalaysia director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip issued a statement indicating that the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) season is expected to start on Nov 5 and will continue until March 2025.

During the initial phase of the Northeast Monsoon, from November to December, heavy rain is expected in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Sarawak and Sabah.

From January to February 2025, Pahang, Johor, Sarawak and Sabah are likely to experience heavy rainfall. – Bernama
