Beware of fake Siti Kasim ad impersonating The Star on social media

PETALING JAYA: Star Media Group Berhad, publisher of The Star print products and online portal, has identified an Instagram and Facebook ad misusing The Star's brand identity.

The scam ad promotes a fraudulent get-rich-quick investment scheme and makes false claims regarding Malaysian lawyer Siti Kasim.

The ad shared on Instagram and Facebook, was made to look like a news report falsely claiming that police raided Siti Kasim's home.

The group clarifies that this Instagram and Facebook ad or fake site is not linked with The Star’s official social media platforms or web presence.

They advise against interacting with these fake posts on Instagram or any suspicious advertisements and advise not joining the programs they promote.

The Star, recognised by Reuters as one of Malaysia's most trusted news sources, publishes on its official website thestar.com.my.

To confirm an article is genuinely from The Star, always check that the web page address begins with https://www.thestar.com.my/.

If you encounter a fake post or page impersonating The Star or any other brands on social media, follow these steps.

First, tap or click the ellipsis (...) symbol on the top right of the ad or page, then choose the exclamation point symbol next to ‘Find support or report’.

The pop-up window will read: "Find support or report Page: Help us understand what's happening."

Select the "Pretending to be something" option, then choose "A business".

When the new pop-up window asks "Which business is this profile pretending to be?", type in The Star or paste The Star’s official Facebook Page URL (https://www.facebook.com/TheStarOnline), select The Star from the drop-down tab, and send your report.

This action will alert Meta of fraudsters impersonating The Star’s online presence on its social media platforms, contributing to a safer online environment for all.
