Eye on other airports too in MACC's counter setting probe

PUTRAJAYA: Graft investigators are keeping an eye on all airports to monitor “counter setting” activities, says Tan Sri Azam Baki.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner said these locations serve as entry points for foreigners into the country, so monitoring against such activities was needed.

“We have been focusing our enforcement activities on KLIA as it is the country's biggest entry point.

“However, we are monitoring other entry points, including other airports, for similar activities,” he told reporters on Friday (Oct 25).

He had been asked if MACC was looking at other airports in its investigation of counter setting activities.

Last month, the MACC detained 60 people, including a senior Immigration officer stationed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, believed to be the mastermind of a counter setting syndicate.

Last week, two Immigration officers manning a checkpoint at the Penang International Airport (PIA) were arrested.

They were believed to have allowed foreign nationals to enter the country unlawfully via a special counter.

On Thursday (Oct 24), a Bangladeshi national was charged in Penang over his alleged involvement in a counter setting syndicate for foreign workers.
