MCMC seeking input on code of conduct for social media platforms

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is seeking public feedback on a draft code of conduct for social media platforms and other service providers.

"The public consultation seeks to gather feedback from service providers, the public, industry players and other relevant shareholders," said the MCMC in a statement on Tuesday (Oct 22).

This follows the introduction of the Regulatory Framework for Internet Messaging and Social Media Service Providers gazetted on Aug 1.

The MCMC said the code of conduct's objective is to create a safer online environment for Malaysians, with a focus on protecting children and vulnerable groups from harmful online content.

"The proposed draft outlines best practices for adoption by service providers licensed under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

"MCMC strongly encourages participation from the public, service providers and all interested stakeholders in this consultation from Oct 22 to Nov 5.

"This is a crucial opportunity for all parties to contribute to policies that will shape the future of the online environment in Malaysia, ensuring that the country's online space remains safe, secure and conducive to growth and innovation," read the statement.
