KLANG: Malaysia's unique cultural landscape reflects the harmony among the various races and stands as a testament to the nation's colourful identity, says Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
"This is our strength and we must continue fostering unity and nurturing relationships among all races to ensure our colourful heritage continues to thrive for the generations to come," the Investment, Trade And Industry Minister said.
He was speaking at a Deepavali event organised by the Kota Raja MIC division at the Dewan Ambang Botanik 2, Bandar Botanik here.
Tengku Zafrul, who is Umno Kota Raja division chief said the constituency has the largest number of Indian voters in the country, making up to 28% or 62,000 of the total number.
At the event, Tengku Zafrul was among those who had contributed funds and other essentials to 250 Indian families from the B40 group as aid for the upcoming Deepavali celebrations.
MIC president Tan Sri S.A. Vigneswaran said at the event that although the party did not have an active position in mainstream politics, it will continue to serve and be the backbone of the Indian community ensuring its welfare is looked into.
Vigneswaran who donated RM10,000 which was to be distributed to the families took time to meet and greet the families at the event.
Selangor state MIC chairman and Kota Raja division chief Datuk Shanker Raj Ayanger said the party is in the midst of identifying needy and low-income Indian families in the township to provide them with necessary aid.
"I hope the Mentri Besar (Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari) will take notice of the needy Indian families in Kota Raja and other areas and channel aid to them. There are 62,000 voters in Kota Raja but the state gave out only 900 Deepavali vouchers," he said.
He said the event was an initiative by the Selangor MIC and all its 22 divisions in the state had held a similar event to handover aid to poor Indian families.
Families that attended the evening event were treated to freshly prepared Indian meals apart from receiving a RM100 cash voucher and other goodies.
