KUALA TERENGGANU: Grappling with the loss of his three close friends, 20-year-old Muhammad Hazarul Ashwaq Azhar feels a deep sense of grief.
The Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) accounting student recounted his terror when he heard of a bad crash near the campus while his friends were out for dinner.
"I still cannot believe they are gone. I tried to call them on the phone when I heard of the accident, but my calls didn’t go through," he said, reported Sinar Harian.
Muhammad Hazarul said he asked to identify the victims at the scene by the police.
"When I saw the motorcycles and bodies lying on the road, my heart broke.”
He said that the late Khairil Anwar Jamaludin (20) was his current roommate, Ku Adib Aizad Ku Azmi (20) was his roommate during the first semester, and Muhammad Akmal Md Tukirin (25) was his best friend at the university.
"There are no words to describe how I felt when I saw them," said Muhammad Hazarul on Thursday (Oct 10).
"The death of my roommate (Khairil) hurts the most. Before he left, I managed to buy him a bun. That was my last gift to him," he said.
Muhammad Hazarul said Khairil had just bought a new shirt.
"Unfortunately, he had never had the chance to wear it to class.
"Even before he and the others left for dinner, he invited me to come along, but I did not go because I was tired.
"I feel sad for not going along with him," he said.
On Wednesday night (Oct 9), three university students were killed, while another, Mohd Ammar Danish Mohammad Ridhuan (20), was seriously injured in an accident after the motorcycles they were riding were struck by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) while they were heading back from dinner at about 7.20pm.
The remains of Muhammad Akmal, who is a Bachelor of Science in Food Service Management student, will be brought back to Muar, Johor and buried at Kampung Baru Cemetery in Ayer Hitam.
The remains of Khairil, a Bachelor of Science in Accounting student, will be buried at Ukay Perdana Islamic Cemetery, Ampang, Selangor, while the remains of Ku Adib, a Bachelor of Science in Accounting will be brought back to Sungai Buloh, Selangor.
It was reported that the 49-year-old woman who was driving the SUV was remanded for four days starting Thursday to assist with investigations.
