MMA: Probe into doctor's death should include reforms recommended in 2022

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has called for the newly formed committee, which is investigating the death of a pathologist in Lahad Datu, to include the recommendations given by a previous committee from the Healthcare Work Culture Improvement Task Force (HWCITF).

Welcoming the new task force, the MMA emphasised that revisiting the Hwcitf recommendations would clarify the direction of ongoing reforms and reassure healthcare personnel about the government's commitment to tackling workplace culture issues and challenges.

"Although a different panel initially compiled the recommendations, substantial time, effort, and resources were spent researching and gathering insights from public healthcare staff," said MMA president Datuk Dr Kalwinder Singh Khaira in a statement on Saturday (Oct 5).

Regarding the investigation, Dr Kalwinder stated that although it only begins on Oct 10, it is hoped that it will be thorough, transparent, and productive, providing meaningful recommendations to improve the work life of healthcare workers in the public sector.

"Additionally, we strongly recommend that the task force, in formulating its recommendations to prevent workplace bullying, engage with and obtain views from all stakeholders and address other complaints that have been raised. MMA stands firmly against any form of bullying and fully supports the Health Ministry in creating a safe and positive work environment," added Dr Kalwinder.
