Retired teacher loses over RM200,000 in phone scam

KUALA TERENGGANU: A retired teacher here lost RM201,900 after being deceived in a phone scam.

Kuala Terengganu OCPD Asst Comm Azli Mohd Noor said the 65-year-old victim received a phone call on Aug 31 from an individual claiming to be an employee of Ampang Medical Centre.

He said the suspect informed that the victim, who is from Cendering, that an insurance claim for RM68,000 made in her name had been denied.

"The suspect asked the victim to lodge a police report that her personal information had been misused.

"However, on Sept 24, the suspect contacted the victim and instructed her to open an account at Agro Bank with a deposit of RM5,000 supposedly for monitoring by Bank Negara Malaysia," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Oct 2).

ACP Azli said the suspect then instructed the victim to transfer money amounting to RM201,900 from her hajj fund account to the newly opened Agro Bank account.

According to him, the victim grew suspicious and told her son about the matter, prompting him to check the balance in her Agro Bank account on Tuesday (Oct 1).

"He found that the victim's balance was only RM100 and 20 transactions had been made from her account to an unknown bank account.

"The money was from the victim's retirement compensation and savings," ACP Azli said. – Bernama
