Sarawak will use rivers to transport heavy cargo once study is complete

SIBU: Rivers will be used to transport construction materials once the study on the Sarawak Integrated Transport Master Plan 2025-2040 is completed, says the state’s Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.

"We want to see how we could increase the use of rives to transport bulky goods such as heavy construction material and timber. We want to reduce the use of roads to lessen traffic jams and damage to the roads," he said during an inspection of a floating boat shed here on Sunday (Sept 29).

Lee said that the floating boat shed, which cost RM904,255, was completed on Aug 22 and was built to store and maintain the Sarawak Rivers Board's enforcement boats.

He said that the study of the master plan began in December 2023 and is expected to be completed in March 2025.

Lee said the master plan involves studying the usage of road, river, and air transportation to create a transport system framework that would meet the state's current and future needs.
