Elephant kills worker, injures another near Mersing school


MERSING: A worker has been killed and another injured by a wild elephant near a school here.

Mersing deputy OCPD Deputy Supt Sharif Shai Sharif Mondoi said the incident occurred when the two workers, who were cleaning a school in Felda Tenggaroh 5, saw the elephant.

"They tried to chase the elephant away but it attacked them instead, " he said, adding that the incident occurred at 11am on Thursday (Sept 26).

He added that the deceased worker was injured on his neck and chest and died on the way to hospital.

The other suffered injuries on his head, internal bleeding and multiple fractures and was sent to the Sultan Ismail Hospital here.

The deceased's body was sent to the Mersing Hospital and police have classified the case as sudden death.

Videos and pictures of the injured workers also went viral on social media.

DSP Sharif advised the public not to engage wild animals and instead report any encounter to authorities.
