Mahkota polls: Over 1,000 cops on duty for nomination day

JOHOR BARU: More than 1,000 policemen will be deployed for the Mahkota by-election nomination day on Sept 14.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar said this was to ensure that the nomination process, which will be held at Dewan Tunku Ibrahim Ismail, runs smoothly.

"A total of 1,074 officers and personnel will be deployed to manage traffic and maintain security throughout the nomination process.

"They will be stationed at strategic locations to monitor the situation and prevent any incidents that could disrupt public order," he said in a statement here on Thursday (Sept 12).

He also advised candidates of the Mahkota by-election and party supporters to comply with election laws and regulations.

"Strict action will be taken against those who cause incidents that disrupt public order or if they violate the law," he said.

The Mahkota state seat became vacant when its assemblyman, Sharifah Azizah from Umno, passed away on Aug 2.

Sharifah Azizah won the seat in the March 2022 Johor state election by a 5,166-vote majority, beating three other candidates from Perikatan Nasional, Pakatan and Parti Warisan.

Polling day for the by-election is on Sept 28.
